Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2012) – Friday marks an important day for Helen Woodward Animal Center. The organization that gave birth to the Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive, with an annual goal of finding homes for orphaned pets during the holiday season, will kick off its 14th year in partnership with Iams. This year, Helen Woodward Animal Center celebrates the 2012/2013 kickoff with Jenni Pulos from Bravo’s Flipping Out and the adoption of two very special orphaned pets – a Siberian Husky named Peppermint and a severely burned kitten named Phoenix, whose will to survive is making national news. The kickoff party will take place on Friday, October 19th at 9:30am in Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Companion Animal Hospital, located at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
The Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive grew out of the concern of Helen Woodward Animal Center President Mike Arms. He noticed that a majority of rescue facilities closed their doors during the holidays, forcing would-be adopters to resort to pet stores or puppy mills when seeking the perfect holiday gift. Not only were pet-gifters purchasing from puppy mills but their staffs were not trained to assay the likelihood of a successful animal/family match, increasing the number of pets sent to shelters once the season was over. With the Home 4 the Holidays Campaign, shelters are asked to keep their doors open and are provided the marketing tools to get the word out. With an incredible partnership with Iams, the program has been grown to a nationwide, and even worldwide, adoption drive focused on the primary goal of raising awareness of pet adoption while also ensuring proper nutrition for more homeless pets with food donations to participating shelters. This year’s campaign, which runs through Jan. 2, 2013, includes over 4,070 partner organizations, including all 50 states and 23 countries, and is credited with saving 7 million pets across the globe since its 1999 inception.
Two beautiful Helen Woodward Animal Center adoptables epitomize everything the program stands for – a purebred Siberian Husky puppy who can sit, shake and beg, named Peppermint and the remarkable kitten Phoenix who has made recent news by surviving caustic chemical burns and delighting attending veterinarians with purrs and affection. “There are so many beautiful and truly extraordinary animals euthanized each year due to shelter overcrowding” said President Mike Arms. “Each year 4 million orphaned dogs and cats are put to death. That is one pet every eight seconds. ”
One celebrity who is working hard to share this message is Jenni Pulos, co-star of the Bravo reality show Flipping Out, currently in its 5th season. The loveable personality is also launching a new spin-off of the show called Interior Therapy, coming to Bravo this fall. Despite her busy schedule, Pulos is taking time out to attend Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 14th Year kickoff of the Iams Home 4 the Holidays Campaign and will be instrumental in assisting with the adoption of both Peppermint and Phoenix. In fact, Pulos will be announcing a very special essay contest to help select an adopter for kitten Phoenix and will be a part of the final selection committee.

There are many ways to get involved in the Iams Home 4 the Holiday campaign, most importantly adopting, and encouraging friends to adopt. The campaign is also designed to provide shelters and rescue centers with much needed food donations. With the help of consumers, the Iams Bags 4 Bowls program aims to donate 5 million meals to animals housed in participating organizations. "With as many as 7 million orphaned pets in the U.S., this campaign is a wonderful platform to raise awareness about pet homelessness," said Ondrea Francy, Iams general manager. "This year Iams and Helen Woodward Animal Center are looking to donate more bowls of food than ever before to orphaned pets; last year we gave 5 million meals to animal organizations and we're looking to exceed that goal this year!"
