Q: I’d like to foster a dog, but I’m concerned about how my own dog will handle it. How can I make it a good experience for everyone?

A:

Fostering an animal in need can be very rewarding; however, I would suggest first taking into consideration your dog’s well-being. Bringing in a foster dog can be quite stressful on a resident dog, especially if he has never lived with another dog before. A positive reinforcement trainer can assist in introducing the dogs on neutral territory and making a smooth transition. If the dogs appear to get along, then I’d recommend taking them for a walk together before bringing them into your home. Keep in mind that not all dogs can live with other dogs.
