Keep kids safe

Since kids are the most common victims of dog bites, it can be useful to remind them that dogs are a lot like people, or their siblings: We all need our personal space, and most of us don’t like to be bothered while we’re eating or sleeping, or to have toys snatched away. Dogs may also lash out if they’re in pain or uncomfortable. Not all pets like being picked up or even petted, so kids should know that before getting too close. It’s good practice for kids to pet animals on the back, keeping their hands away from the pet’s mouth. If a dog does attack, kids should “be a tree” (stand still with arms folded under their neck) or “be a rock” (if already on the ground, stay there, facedown, covering the head and neck).
