The sixth annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes a 9/11 tribute to police and search and rescue dogs as well as more than 80 dogs hitting the waves to raise awareness of and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership . The event also features the Beach Bum Bikini Babe Canine Costume Contest; Doo the Dah, where people and pets in costume surf together to raise funds for Helen Woodward Animal Center; more than 70 interactive vendor booths; and the induction of the first dog into the HWAC Surf Dog Hall of Fame.
The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon kicks off at 8 a.m. with a 9/11 tribute honoring all of the dogs involved in the search and rescue efforts following the events of September 11, 2001 in both New York and Washington, D.C. – the largest deployment of search dogs in U.S. history.
At 8:30 a.m., the competition begins. Internet sensations Riccochet, Nani, Dozer, and Buddy join their canine friends to compete in four weight classes throughout the day. The winners from each category are invited back to surf in the “Best in Surf” at 1 p.m. The Surf Dog competition will be judged by some of top riders from Volcom, other pros and surfing aficionados.
At 10 a.m. the Beach Bum and Bikini Babe Costume Contest kicks off with celebrity judges Tyana Alvarado, Craig Silke and Dennis Luciani. Doo the Dah starts at 11:20 a.m. when both people and their pets take to the waves in costume, performing ridiculous stunts in front of celebrity judges Mark Munoz Michael, Munoz and Gillian Larson. At 1:30 the event concludes with an awards ceremony honoring the top dogs of the day as well as the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame.
Vendor booths include some of the top brands of pet products and surf gear as well as other San Diego favorites including Eukanuba, Playa Pup, Banfield Pet Hospitals, It’s Just Lunch and Schubach Aviation. Those in attendance will also get a preview of professional surfer Guy Takayama’s newly -designed “Surfah dog” surf boards made especially for your four-legged best friend’s safety and enjoyment.

Tyana Alvarado is from season 10 of NBC’s reality business competition, The Apprentice. She was the only contestant who did not apply for the show that season – she was sought out by the casting department for her intelligence, success in the Los Angeles real estate market and the hopes of bringing balance to the cast. Tyana’s a proud parent of two shih tzus and she is happy to be a part of this event and to help raise awareness. She has a love for animals, especially dogs. While on The Apprentice, she won her task as project manager on the Dog Spa Challenge with Cesar Millan as the judge. Gillian Larson retired after working as a registered nurse for 41 years, but never satisfied her appetite for adventure and travel. She is competitive by nature and feels as though she was a perfect fit for the game of Survivor. After multiple tries, she finally landed a part on Survivor: Gabon which gave her a spring board to do good. She is involved in many fundraising events and has developed Reality Rally, which is a trademarked fund raising business to raise funds with other Reality Stars http://www.realityrally.com . On top of her great charity work, she is a motivational speaker, speaking at schools, service groups, organizations and corporations. Dennis Luciani is a resident of Sherman Oaks and loves to bring fun to any gathering he attends with props and costumes. It was his fun personality that attracted producers to cast him on season one of NBC’s Average Joe. Though he was eliminated and did not win Melana’s heart, Dennis’ exposure on TV has landed him many appearances on talk shows and at numerous charity events. He is chasing his dream of becoming an actor in Hollywood and has landed parts in three movies, a few short films and even a couple of episodes of General Hospital.
Mark Munoz from CBS’ Amazing Race was born and raised in Santa Monica. He was a wrestler in High School then went on to racing horses as a professional jockey for over 20 years. These days he works as a jockey/actor/stuntman in Hollywood and other places around the globe. Michael Munoz is a Santa Monica native who grew up as an athlete, surfer, dancer and all around entertainer. Once Michael started working as a stuntman and actor on film in the late 1970s, he immediately found his passion and never looked back. He was cast on The Amazing Race season 14, and can be seen stunt doubling for Danny DeVito in multiple projects such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and When In Rome. These days he spends most of his time in Maui with his wife and recently produced a talk show called Good Morning Hawai'i. Michael is excited to come out and judge his fellow surfing friends!
Craig Slike led us on the adventure of a lifetime in the summer of 2008 as the title character on ABC’s reality series, The Mole. Throughout the fifth season, Slike was both cunning and intelligent in order to sabotage his fellow contestants, or in other words, his unsuspecting victims. Craig now resides in San Diego with his feisty dachshund, Roscoe and laid back golden retriever Bing. He is partner and owner of The Agency, an advertising agency in San Diego and is very active in many charitable organizations.
