San Diego Humane Society offers a variety of fun, educational Dog Behavior and Training Classes.

Dog Training Workshop: Crate Training

Tuesday, January 12th from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego

Not sure how to use your newly-purchased crate? Do you have a dog that refuses to go into their crate? This workshop is designed to make crate training fun using games! In addition to crate training we will also teach your dog to settle and pay attention to you. Pre-registration is required over the phone, 619-299-7012 x 2247, or on our website. You can also email behavior@sdhumane.org. Cost: $35. Free for animals adopted from San Diego Humane Society. Adopters must provide their animal’s identification number, given by San Diego Humane Society, when registering.


Dog Training Workshop: Happily Ever After

Wednesday, January 13th from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego

This mini lecture addresses how to prevent and manage unwanted dog behaviors before they become a problem. Lecture Topics Include:

How to successfully integrate your pet into your home; how to communicate effectively with your dog; preventing destructive behaviors; solving problem behaviors; and house training. This lecture does not cover aggression issues. Dog Training Course: Puppy Preschool

Wednesday, January 20th from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

Puppy Preschool is designed to meet the training and socialization needs of pups that are 8-18 weeks old. Held at our San Diego Campus on Gaines Street, owners and their pups learn to adapt to new people, dogs, environments, and experiences.

COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE: Basic puppy care, house-training, off-leash socialization, appropriate greetings, basic skills, including sit, down, wait, come when called, leash walking, and drop it. To register online, select your date on the online calendar. You can also email behavior@sdhumane.org.

For dogs 18 weeks old and older, this introductory-level course addresses training areas of immediate concern to dog owners including loose leash walking, coming when called, watch me/attention to owner, greeting without jumping, settle down, wait for permission and much more! This investment in your dog’s future costs a one-time fee of $100, and includes informative handouts, a clicker, and prizes. Animals adopted from San Diego Humane Society will receive 20% off Head Start classes. Adopters must provide their animal’s identification number, given by San Diego Humane Society, when registering. The course consists of six sessions with each session lasting 1 hour. There are no pre-requisites for this class. Proof of rabies vaccinations and pre-registration are required. All dogs must be non-aggressive towards other dogs.

Dog Training Course: Level 2: Superb Skills

Sunday, January 10th from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm at at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

Sunday January 17th from 10:30 am – 11:30 am at 572 Airport Road, Oceanside

Tuesday, January 19th from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

For dogs 5 months and older, this mid-level course builds on skills learned in Level 1: Marvelous Manners. We will focus on differentiating verbal cues from hand signals, as well as adding distance and duration to all behaviors learning in Level 1: Marvelous Manners. Prerequisites include: graduate of Marvelous Manners class or equivalent knowledge of sit, down, side and a 30-second stay; familiar with a clicker; able to learn in close proximity to other dogs (3-5 feet). This investment in your dog’s future costs a one-time fee of $100. The course consists of six sessions each lasting 1 hour. Must be 18 weeks or older. Classes are held at our San Diego campus on Gaines Street. Proof of rabies vaccination and pre-registration are required. All dogs must be non-aggressive toward other dogs.

Dog Training Course: Level 3: Reliable Rovers

Saturday, January 9th from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

This training class is designed to challenge both you and your dog. Lessons will focus on strengthening behaviors learned in Level 2: Superb Skills by increasing distance, duration, and distractions. Dogs must be okay with other dogs passing by in close proximity. This investment in your dog’s future costs a one-time fee of $90. The course consists of six sessions each lasting 1 hour. Dogs must be 6 months old or older. Proof of rabies vaccinations and pre-registration are required. Dog Training Course: Canine Good Citizen Class

Saturday, January 9th from 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

Help your dog become a valued member of the community! Canine Good Citizen class is extremely beneficial to you, your dog, and your relationship with your dog. In some instances, a dog that is certified as a Canine Good Citizen may be entitled to special benefits, discounts, or other advantages. Canine Good Citizen is an intermediate-level obedience course developed for passing the Canine Good Citizen certification test. The class may be taken with or without the final certification test. Canine Good Citizen is six sessions long. The first five sessions include class time – the final session is for testing. Dogs must be 6 months or older. The cost of the course is a one time fee of $120, which includes six weekly classes each lasting 1 hour. To register online, select your date on the online calendar. Does your pup run the other way when they see another dog? Are they afraid to investigate objects in their world? Do they shy away when people approach? Shy Dog is an introductory level course designed for dogs that are overwhelmed by their environment. This class focuses on building trust between you and your dog, as well as boosting your dog’s confidence through positive reinforcement training. Dogs must be 18 weeks or older. Dog Training Course: Introduction to K9 Nose Work

Wednesday, January 13th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm at 5500 Gaines Street, San Diego 

This beginner class focuses on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise.  Dog & handler teams learn how to perform basic container & interior searches. To register online, select your date on the online calendar.
