A Happy New Life

While Scott Nordstrom was recovering from the death of his dog of 11 years, he saw a news story about San Diego Humane Society’s involvement in rescuing dogs from the South Korean meat trade. He looked at the SDHS website to see the puppies who were available for adoption, saw Carol’s personality profile, and knew she was the one.

Nordstrom made an appointment to meet her at SDHS’s San Diego Campus. She took to him, tail wagging constantly, but she had a foot injury. “I told them I’d be back in a week, and if her foot was better, I’d take her home. I don’t think they believed me,” Nordstrom says. But he returned, and Carol’s foot had healed.

When it was time to take her home, the first struggle was getting her out of the kennel. “She had no idea what life was like outside of cages,” Nordstrom says. “It took three of us about 10 minutes to coax her into my car to go home. When we arrived, it took me another 15 minutes to get her out.” SDHS also advised that Carol would have struggles other dogs don’t, and would need to adjust to basic things like feeling grass, climbing stairs and avoiding cars.

While adjusting to her new life, Carol’s biggest fears were the car and crowded places. But now she enjoys car rides and happily sits in the front passenger side, and accompanies Nordstrom to work.

“I’m not a miracle worker,” he says. “I’m just your average San Diegan who saw dogs that were neglected and wanted to make one live the most comfortable life she could. I’m proud to say she is now.”
